selection of works undertaken
It's never a dull moment here at ConservationWorks. Projects have included the historic evaluation and significance assessment of a Grade II* Hall House, a building history and significance assessment for an unlisted redundant chapel in a conservation area and advice on repairs to a Grade II Victorian school by a major architect. We even had a stab at acquiring a Building at Risk but the owner is not ready -yet- to part company with it.
Other projects include presenting arguments for CAMRA against proposals relating to historic public houses at planning appeals; presenting arguments against the proposed scheme at the Ram Brewery Public Inquiry in 2009 (the scheme was turned down by the Secretary of State); and carrying out feasibilty and options studies for redundant buildings from cemetery chapels to beerhouses.
Somehow we also managed to write some articles for the conservation press, including this one for the RICS Conservation Journal on the conservation of historic cemeteries and their chapels. What with a few lectures on the conservation of breweries and chapels, leading an historic walk or two, making photographic surveys and hosting countless community liaison consultation events to canvass opinion on proposed developments, the sheer variety of work we do is pretty interesting.
Whether we're sketching, measuring and assessing the details of a timber-framed mediaeval roof in midsummer, making lightning GolookSee building assessments or 'ground-truthing' lost C18th and 19th barns and stables on a farmstead site in December, it's many things but never boring.
